MID TERM

TIME: 1.40HRS , NAME…………………………………………………. PLAN…………

INSTRUCTIONS:1.Answer ALL questions.2.Read the question carefully.3.Each question carries a different weight.

SECTION A ( Choose the answer correctly)

1.(i)Which of the following sources of energy are non-renewable?

A. Water, wind, wood and natural gas. B Fossils, sun, oil and nuclear.

C. Natural gas, water, nuclear and wood. D Wind, sun, fossils and oil.

E. Oil and all natural gas

(ii) Tow forces of 5 N and 8 N are acting at the same point and are inclined at

an angle of 45° to each other. What will be their resultant force?

A 11.2 N .B 12 N. C 22.4 N.D 1.2 N E 1.12 N.

(iii). In a laboratorythe diameter of a piece of wire can accurately be measured by

A Vernier Calliper .B Micrometer screw gauge .C Engineer’s Calliper

D Rate meter .E A thread wound round it once.

(iv) A bus carrying a very big load on its top carrier can easily overturn because

A it cannot run fast. B its equilibrium is stable. C its centre of gravity is low

D it is more stable and can run fast. E its centre of gravity is high.

(v) (vii) When charging a body by friction, the particles which are transferred are

A protons. Bnuclei and protons. C nuclei D electronsE protons and electrons.

SECTION

2. (a) Define the following terms as applied to machines:

(i) Load (ii) Effort (iii) Efficiency

(b) A load of 500 N is raised through 5 m by a machine when its effort moves simultaneously though a distance of 25 m. If the efficiency of the machine is 80%, calculate its mechanical advantage.

3.(i) State the law of conservation of linear momentum.

(ii) Define the term “elastic collision”.

(b) A body of mass 8 kg moving with a velocity of 20 m/s collides with another body of mass 4 kg moving with a velocity of 10 m/s in the same direction. The velocity of the 8 kg body is reduced to 15 m/s after the collision. If the bodies do not stick together after the collision, calculate the final velocity of the 4 kg body.

4. Define the following (i) Resistance (ii) Resistivity (iii)

(a)State the factors which determine the resistance of a conductor.

(b)Find the length of nichrome wire of diameter 0.56 mm which will provide a resistance of100 Ω given that its resistivity is 10^-6Ωm.

5. (a)(i)What are sustainable energy sources?

(ii)State four applications of energy generated from water.

(b) (i)Define geothermal energy.

(ii) Briefly explain how geothermal energy can be harnessed.

(c)(i)What is a windmill?

(ii) Mention three disadvantages of energy caused by wind.

(iii) Does wind itself possess energy? Explain.
